Choosing a prompter
Seven questions worth asking
We are not going to publish a table of ticks against other people's apps — we have not tested them, and a comparison we cannot stand behind is worth nothing to you. Here is what we would actually check instead, and how OwlPrompter answers each one.
-
Does it scroll at your pace, or at a number you guessed?
Fixed-speed scrolling means you spend the take chasing the text or waiting for it. Look for a prompter that tracks your voice, and check whether that tracking works in your language rather than only in English.
OwlPrompter: OwlPrompter tracks your speech on the device, in every language the app ships in, and holds when you stop.
-
What happens when you look away?
Glancing at a note, a second camera or someone off-frame is normal. Most prompters keep scrolling and you lose your place.
OwlPrompter: Eye-contact mode pauses the scroll the moment your eyes leave the lens, and resumes when you look back.
-
Where do your scripts actually live?
A lot of prompters require an account and upload your scripts so they can sync. If your scripts are confidential — client work, medical, legal, unreleased products — that matters.
OwlPrompter: There is no account and no sync. Scripts and recordings stay on your phone and we cannot read them.
-
Is the recording what you saw in the preview?
Some apps overlay captions and effects in the preview only, then export a plain video. Check an actual exported file before you rely on it.
OwlPrompter: Filters, backgrounds and captions are rendered into the recording, and every take exports a matching .srt file.
-
Does it work with no signal?
Voice tracking and transcription are often cloud services. On a shoot with bad reception, that is the moment they stop working.
OwlPrompter: Prompting, recording, voice tracking, eye-contact mode and Delivery Score all run offline. Only live streaming needs a connection.
-
What does the free version cost you?
“Free” often means a watermark burned into your video, or a script limit low enough to be unusable. Read what the free tier actually gives you.
OwlPrompter: The free tier records without a watermark and includes filters, import and Delivery Score. The limit is three scripts.
-
Can you stop paying and keep it?
If you only shoot occasionally, a subscription is poor value. Check whether a one-time purchase exists at all.
OwlPrompter: A lifetime purchase unlocks the same Pro features for one payment, and both subscriptions start with a 7-day free trial.
What we would say we are good at
It reads with you
Voice scroll and eye-contact mode mean you set the pace by speaking, not by guessing a number beforehand.
Nothing leaves your phone
No account, no cloud, no analytics on your scripts. Voice tracking, eye contact and Delivery Score all run on the device.
The free tier is genuinely usable
Scrolling, recording, filters, import and Delivery Score cost nothing, with no watermark. Pro is for people who need more than three scripts.
You can buy it once
A lifetime purchase exists and it is not hidden. If subscriptions are not for you, pay once and be done.
And what we are not: there is no Mac app, the online teleprompter on this site is a simple scroller rather than the app, and there is no beam-splitter hardware from us. If you need those today, another prompter is the better buy.
